Plymouth Airport gained a new service on Monday March 4th 1935, when two aeroplanes carrying dignitaries from Hull and Southampton arrived just after Midday. Captain Norman MacMillan, a prominent figure in the British Air League, launched the new service at Hull in the morning and after touching down at Nottingham and Leicester, the first plane, carrying the Lord Mayor of Hull, Alderman A Stark, met up at Southampton with the second carrying the Mayor of that Town, Alderman Waller. Also in the party were Air Commodore P F M Fellowes, a director of Provincial Airways; Flight-Lieutenant H Thomas, managing director of that Company; and Mr I F Payne, manager of Southampton municipal aerodrome. They were met at Roborough by the Mayor of Plymouth, Alderman J E Pillar; the Town Clerk, Mr R J Fittall; Major F J Dean, Plymouth Airport Officer; Mr D Laws, Plymouth's Head Postmaster; Mr Cyril J Palmer, news editor of the Western Morning News; and Mr T Joyce-Clarke, the branch manager of Provincial Airways.
