This section of the PLYMOUTH DATA
website provides an index to the streets, houses, farms and localities within the
mid nineteenth century Boroughs of Devonport and Plymouth and their Ancient Parishes and
Municipal Electoral Wards. The information is
based on Ordnance Survey maps dated around 1860 and it therefore cannot be guaranteed that
the information applies to any other time period. Only locations included on these maps have been indexed so there may be other streets, houses or pubs that are not mentioned. It should not be inferred that missing places did not exist at the time. The Ancient Parishes are as follows: ST ANDREWS the Mother Church of all local parishes except Stoke Damerel. It certainly dates from the year 1264 although its parish records date only from 1581. STOKE DAMEREL the Mother Church of Plymouth Dock, renamed Devonport from 1824. The parish records date from 1595. EAST STONEHOUSE Although the Church existed by 1497, the Parish was not created until 1746. It was a chapelry of Saint Andrews. Some records exist from 1697. CHARLES A modern parish created by Act of Parliament in 1641 and subdivided from St Andrews in 1644. The church was consecrated in 1665 and the parish includes the tything of Compton Gifford. The Parishes of Eggbuckland, Pennycross and Saint Budeaux, as well as the part of Charles Parish that was in the Tything of Compton Gifford (i.e. outside of the Borough of Plymouth) have not been included.
