To the east of Marlborough Square Barracks were the Granby Square Barracks. These were also commenced in 1757 and comprised of buildings one storey high. It was occupied by infantry. It was named in honour of John Manners (1721-1770), lieutenant-general, who was created Marquis of Granby. By the 1860s this had become the Devonport Military Prison and later again was known as Granby Barracks. New Granby Barracks was formerly the Royal Horse Artillery Barracks.
