PLYMOUTH BANKING

Messrs ELFORD, ELFORD AND HARTWELL

The first bank in Plymouth Dock was formed by Messrs Elford, Elford and Hartwell in 1788.  It is not clear if this was a forerunner of the Plymouth Dock Bank.

It is not listed as existing in 1830 so it had either already ceased trading or it was a victim of the banking crisis of 1825.

Sir William Elford (1749-1837) was a partner in the Plymouth Bank, which did collapse in 1825.
