(PLYMOUTH) GENERAL BANK
Messrs Hingston & Company founded the General Bank in 1812 at premises in Woolster Street, Plymouth. As Messrs Hingston and Prideaux, the Bank issued a notice on October 5th 1825 -- or, as it was printed at the time, '10th Month, 5th, 1825' -- stating that they took: 'the earliest opportunity of thus publicly offering their grateful acknowledgments to their Friends of Plymouth and its Vicinity, for their great confidence, and the kindnesses which they have recently received from them.' Having managed to remain solvent, by 1830 they had moved to Bedford Street, where they were open from 10am until 4pm. The General Bank was absorbed into the Devon & Cornwall Banking Company in 1836.
