HOURS OF BUSINESS In 1865 the hours of business for the Plymouth and South Devon Savings Bank in Whimple Street, Plymouth, were from 12 Noon to 2pm on Mondays and Friays and from 11am until 2pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, which were the market days. As wages were paid on Saturdays, it opened again from 6 to 8pm on Saturday evenings but, rather cunningly, would allow only deposits to be made, not withdrawals. Apparently, the maximum withdrawal without notice was £30 and likewise that amount was the maximum that could be deposited in any one year. Business hours were revised in 1898 and became 10am to 3pm every day except Wednesdays, when closing time was 1pm, in keeping with half-day closing. It did continue to open from 6 to 8pm on Saturday evenings. A programme of expansion that had started in 1923 with the enlargement of the offices and the taking on of extra clerks, saw the business hours again revised in 1928: 10am until 4pm every day plus 6 to 8pm on Friday as well as Saturday evenings.
