BEACON CASTLE GREYHOUND, WHIPPET
AND SPORTS GROUND

The Beacon Castle Greyhound, Whippet and Sports Ground was situated at Lipson, near the top of Efford Lane.

It was opened on the evening of Thursday October 22nd 1931 and whippet and greyhound racing was to take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturday afternoons.  This was not in competition with Pennycross Stadium as they ran their meetings on the other evenings.  By means of running a trackless hare, races for whippets of up to 300 yards and for greyhounds of up to one thousand yards could be run.

There were to be seven races in each programme, with eight dogs in two of them and six in the remainder, including the hurdles.

A club was provided and had been furnished by the men from the Efford Ex-Servicemen's Colony.

In July 1932 it was advertising meetings every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings at 7.45pm and every Saturday afternoon at 3.15pm.  Admission was 7d.  The track was at that time in the process of being re-turfed.

In addition there was free admission to the sweepstakes and trials every Wednesday evening at 7pm.

It was planned to hold rugby and hockey matches at the Ground.
