At 6am on
Monday May 19th 1975 a 9-years-old Plymouth school boy by the name of Master
Andrew Knight launched Britain's 11th commercial radio station, Plymouth
Sound. Although the station expected teething troubles, everything
went smoothly. [1] It was
founded jointly by Mr Bob Hussell, a member of a well-known Plymouth
business family, and Mr David Bassett.
The first
programme was "Sunrise Sound", a four-hour breakfast show in which Mr Colin
Bower presented music, news, traffic information, local topics and a special
link-up with Radio Swansea. This was followed by "Phone Forum", with
Mr David Bassett, and "Louise Churchill's Tradio", described as an 'on
the air market'. [1]
Other names
associated with the radio station were Mr Mike Allen; Mr Malcolm Carroll,
head of news; Mr John Coates; Mr Chris A'Court; Mr
Ian Calvert; Mr Peter Greig; Miss Carmella McKenzie; Mr Brian Measures; Mr
Gordon Sparks.
On March
23rd 2009 Plymouth Sound became part of Heart FM, a national radio station
owned by Global Radio.
