Messrs G E BAUDAINS & SON
The Plymouth business house of Messrs G E Baudains & Son, house furnishers and upholsterers, was situated at numbers 43 and 44 York Street, Plymouth, before the Second World War. Although this business was quite well known ion Plymouth very little seems to have been written about it. Obviously it was founded by Mr George Edward Baudains, who seems to have been of French or Channel Islands origin. It would appear that he had passed the business to his son, Mr George Francis Ferris Baudains, by 1955 as he was then living at number 44 York Street, Plymouth, and his home telephone number was the same as that for the business, Plymouth 62483. When York Street was demolished and replaced by Western Approach the business moved to Townsend Hill, Mutley Plain, where Mr R Brockington was in charge in 1965. Four craftsmen were employed by the business at their repair works in Hastings Street, where mattresses were rejuvenated and chairs were re-upholstered. Most of the work was done by hand. The workshop contained only two mechanical aids, a sewing machine and a carding machine for cleaning the mattress filling. Little of the original mattress was kept in the process so for £10 5s for a 4 feet 6 inch mattress the customer could get an almost new one. [1] Mr George Edward Baudains passed away at number 38 Valletort Road, Plymouth, on May 30th 1976 and Mr George Francis Ferris Baudains died in March 1994.
