Messrs BURNELL & COMPANY Messrs Burnell & Company, wholesale grocers, was a co-partnership of Mr William Burnell and his two sons, Mr William Burnell and Mr John Burnell. [1] Mr William Burnell senior was baptised at the Church of Plympton Saint Maurice, Plympton Erle, Devon, on June 17th 1757. He was the son of Mr Emmanuel and Mrs Grace Burnel (sic). [2] Of their family of six children William and John were the only boys. It is not known when they joined their father in business or whether he was in business before they were born. [3] It was in later years claimed that the business was founded in 1797. [4] Mr William Burnell was admitted as a Freeman of the Borough of Plymouth in 1831. [3] In 1834 Mr William Burnell senior passed away, followed in 1840 by his widow, Mrs Agnes Burnell. [5] The two sons were sole proprietors of the business in 1844, when it was still at number 4 Bilbury Street. [6] By the 1850s they had taken on some partners and the business was known as Messrs Burnell, Brown and Nicholson.
