BUSINESS HOUSES

Messrs FRIARY MILL BAKERY Ltd

Updated:  19 April 2011

The Friary Mill Bakery was founded in 1989 by Miss Karen Jane Williams and Mr Philip Gardner in the premises at number 15 Gasking Street, Plymouth, that formerly belonged to Mr A J Hill, who used to make his own pasties and pies.  [1]

Miss Williams was the granddaughter of Mr Stafford John Williams, the owner of the pre-War Williams's Cafe at 199 Union Street, Plymouth, and the post-War Magnet Restaurant in Cornwall Street.  She trained at the Plymouth College of Further education and then obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND) in hotel and catering administration at the South Devon Technical College.  [1]

From simply producing pasties and pies the business grew to include bread, rolls and confectionary and the Bakery also specialises in anniversary cakes.  At the start they had just four staff.  [1]

Ten years later, with Miss Williams now Mrs Milner, they opened a new shop in Ebrington Street, adjoining the first one in Gasking Street, and had shops at Hyde Park, Keyham, Stoke, Higher Compton and Saltash.  The cakes and pastries were made at the Keyham branch while their bread and doughnuts were manufactured at the branch in Saltash.  The staff then numbered 54.  [2]
