BUSINESS HOUSES

Messrs PERILLA'S FISH AND CHIP RESTAURANT

Updated:  15 February 2011

It would appear that the Perilli family first arrived in Plymouth around 1910.  In the census of 1911 Mr John Perilli, a 58-years-old Italian, was living at number 46 Stillman Street, Plymouth, with his wife of some 31 years, who was a refreshment house keeper.  John's occupation is not listed.  Assisting his mother in the business was 25-years-old Michael Perilli, who had been born in Birmingham.  [1]

Also at the same address were Mr Gerald Perilli, refreshment house keeper, and his wife of three years, Antonia.  [2]

Mr Michael Perilli married 18-years-old Miss Giulia (Julia) Marino in Plymouth in 1912.  [3]

According to the business's own website, it was the two sisters-in-law, Giulia (Julia) and Antonia, who founded the current business when they set up a refreshment house in Fore Street, Saltash, in 1913.  [4]

One of Michael and Julia's children, born on August 7th 1915, was Mr Giovanni Stephan Perilli, known as John.  [3]

In 1935 Michael Perilli was listed as an ice cream manufacturer at 46 Palace Street.  [5]

Mrs Perilli moved her restaurant from Saltash to Plymouth, in 1940.  [6]

Michael's brother and husband of Antonia, Mr Geraldo Perilli died in Plymouth in 1940 at the age of 56.  [3]

During the Second World War the business moved from one location to another as the buildings became damaged and it was not until 1948 they it eventually settled at number 5 King Street.  As the reconstruction of the City Centre took place so they required to move again and they were one of the first businesses to take premises in Market Avenue, as part of the new Pannier Market.   [4]

In 1950-51 their shop was at 5 King Street, with Mr G Perilla and Mr John Perilla living at 7 Portreath Gardens.  [7]

Mr Michael Perilli died in Plymouth in 1954 at the age of 68.  [3]

They expanded their business during the 1960s, adding premises in Ford Park Road, Mutley, in 1968.  [4]

The fish and chip restaurant was at 35 Market Avenue in 1968.  [8]

Mrs Julia Perilli died suddenly at her home in Welbeck Avenue, Plymouth, on Saturday November 26th 1977.  She was 82 years of age.  The business was continued by her son, Mr John (Giovanni Stephan) Perilli and grandson Mr Roger Perilli.  [6]

Her funeral took place at the Roman Catholic Cathedral on Thursday December 1st 1977 and she was buried at Ford Park Cemetery.  [9]

The restaurant in Market Avenue was sold in July 1993 and they decided to concentrate their family efforts on the one fish and chip restaurant at Ford Park Road.  [4]

Mr Giovanni Stephen Perilli died in Plymouth on Friday January 25th 2002.  He was 86 years of age.  [9]
