Messrs PLYMOUTH COAL COMPANY Ltd
The Plymouth business house of Messrs Plymouth Coal Company Ltd, coal and coke merchants, was situated in Phoenix Chambers, Princess Square, Plymouth, and at Bayly's Wharf, Sutton Harbour, until their new office, Wallsend House, Derry's Cross, was opened. Originally founded in 1902 as the Plymouth Steamship Company Ltd, it started to import coal by sea into Bayly's Wharf in Sutton Harbour. In 1906 it built reinforced concrete bagging hoppers which were still in use a half a century later. [1] The Plymouth Coal Company Ltd was formed in 1915 and had offices in Westwell Street and later Phoenix Chambers, Princess Square. [1] Two other coal merchants were acquired: Messrs Hooper, Martin & Truscott Ltd, Messrs John Westcott Ltd, and the Three Towns Window Cleaning & Supply Company Ltd. [1] During October 1957 the four businesses were brought together in one building, Wallsend House, at Derry's Cross. [1]
