BUSINESS HOUSES

Messrs CONDY U'REN AND SON

Created:  08 December 2011

The Plymouth business house of Messrs Condy U'Ren & Son, chemists, had shops at 55 Cobourg Street; 43 Ryder Road; 2 Alvington Terrace, Old Laira Road; and Hender's Corner, Eggbuckland Road before the Second World War.  After the War the Alvington Terrace branch became 168 Old Laira Road and the Hender's Corner one became 6 Eggbuckland Road.  One branch was added at 23 Johnston Terrace, Keyham.

The business was started by Mr William Condy U'Ren, who was born at the end of 1861 in Plymouth, the eldest son of Mr William Way U'Ren and Miss Martha Torry Condy  [1].  They had married at Charles' Church, Plymouth, on November 14th 1860  [2].

He was educated at Liskeard, in Cornwall, where his parents were living at Grove Park in 1871.  His father was a granite agent.  [1]

Young William is said to have bought the business of Mr George Thomas Starkey at number 55 Cobourg Street in 1890.  [3]

Certainly in April 1891 the family were living at 7 Sutherland Terrace, Plymouth, his father being declared as 'living on own means'.  [4]

On May 14th 1891 29-years-old Mr William Condy U'Ren married Miss Eva Martha Broadhead at the Church of Saint Matthias, Plymouth.  [2]

By the end of the century William and Eva had three sons, Cyril Condy U'Ren, Rudolph Roy U'Ren and Edgar Ernest U'Ren.  In 1907 they had their only daughter, Bertha Broadhead U'Ren.  [5]

Only the eldest son, Mr Cyril Condy U'Ren, born in 1893, became a chemist and joined his father in 1925, five years after he had married Miss Mabel D Widger  [2].  The business then became Condy U'Ren & Son.  [6]

Mr William Condy U'Ren retired from the business in 1937 and died at his home, "Penpraze", Venn Grove, Hartley, Plymouth, on Saturday December 14th 1940  [6].  The funeral was held at the Church of All Saints on Wednesday December 18th 1940 and he was interred at Efford Cemetery  [7].

Mr Edgar Ernest U'Ren died in Plymouth on November 24th 1976  [8].  In 1935 he was living at 55 Cobourg Street while Cyril was at "Hillsborough", Torr Lane  [9].  Was he running the business?

It is not known when the business ceased trading but Mr Cyril Condy U'Ren died at his home, 16 Thornhill Way, on August 12th 1984  [8].

As far as is known, his only son, Mr Roger Condy U'Ren, had nothing to do with the business and he died on December 28th 1982, before his father passed away  [8].
