JOHN HILL'S GIFT
Mr John Hill gave to the Mayor and Commonalty of Plymouth the sum of £50, from which they agreed by means of an indenture dated February 19th 1672 to pay the churchwardens and overseers of the poor for the parish of Saint Andrew's the sum of £2 12s every year. Out of that sum, twelve pence per week was to be distributed at Saint Andrew's Church every Sunday morning 'in good penny white or wheaten bread'. In 1820/21 the sum of 52 shillings was being paid to the churchwardens of Saint Andrew's but instead of loaves of bread being given out weekly it was distributed every Michaelmas Day in the same manner as Sir John Acland's Gift. By an Order of the Charity Commissioners dated October 20th 1905, Mr John Hill's Gift was combined with others to form a unified scheme operated by Plymouth Corporation. Principal Source:
