THOMAS HODSON'S GIFT
By his will dated June 11th 1819, which was proved in London on February 21st 1820, Mr Thomas Hodson bequeathed £500 to the Household of Faith School in Plymouth. Mr Hodson left a further gift of £1,000 to another of the Reverend Doctor Robert Hawker's charitable institutions, the Corpus Christi Society. In the course of proceedings in the Court of Chancery, the legacy to the Household of Faith was reduced to £378 8s 7d. This was added to interest of £81 18s 10d and when paid to the trustees in 1826 was used to purchase Consols to the value of £580 8s 10d. That amount formed part of the £932 8s 5d later transferred by the School to the Official Trustees of Charitable Funds. The Corpus Christi Society had been formed by the Reverend Doctor Hawker in 1813 for the relief of the poor distressed members of the mystical body of Christ. The money donated by Mr Hodson was apparently spent on the general purposes of the Society as it had no other endowments. The Society was later revived as the Poor Saints Relief Fund, about which more will be published shortly.
