CHARITIES

JOHN LANE'S CHARITY

Updated:  29 March 2011

In a letter addressed to the Charity Commissioners in 1865, mention was made of a bequest of £500 per annum (!) having been given in 1778 or 1779 by Mr John Lane for the provision of clothing for the poor.  The gift was said to have been commemorated by a tablet in the old Council Chamber.

The Charity Commission had no record of this Charity and no further particulars were uncovered during the Inquiry in 1908.
