LYING-IN CHARITIES
Both Plymouth and Plymouth Dock (Devonport) had Lying-in Charities, run by the ladies of the respective Towns for the benefit of poor expectant mothers. They were run on the same basis. The ladies made works of arts and crafts, knitting, sewing, etc., which were placed on sale annually to raise funds. The sale of work in Plymouth took place at the London Inn in Vauxhall Street. They also collected annual subscriptions, Mrs Soltau being the treasurer of the Plymouth Charity. On the evening after the sale a ball was held to enlarge the funds. Each married woman applying for assistance received five shillings in cash, a suit of linen for her baby, and the attendance of a midwife. The matron of the Plymouth Charity was (Mrs) Honor Waddon, who lived in the Saint Andrew's Almshouses. Source:
