NATHANIEL NATHAN'S CHARITY
Mr Nathaniel Nathan, by his will dated December 16th 1864 and proved at Exeter on September 19th 1865, directed his trustees, subject to a life interest which expired in 1867, to retain the sum of £100 and to distribute the income twice every year, at the Feast of Passover and at the start of the Jewish New Year, to poor Jewish residents of Plymouth and neighbourhood. The legacy abated, owing to insufficiency of assets, and by 1908 amounted to Consols to the value of |£91 16s 4d. They were held in the names of Mr Abraham Ralph, Mr Lewis Hyman, Mr Alfred Rooker, by then deceased, and Mr John Williams Matthews. The last-named person was the sole surviving trustee and proposed to transfer the fund to the Official Trustees of Charitable Funds. The dividend amounted to £2 5s 8d a year and was distributed by Mr Matthews in sums of between one shilling and fifteen shillings annually to members of the Jewish community.
