St FRANCIS' CHURCH, HONICKNOWLE

The Church of St Francis is situated in Little Dock Lane at Honicknowle, Plymouth.

This conventional district was formed from the parish of St Budeaux in 1939.  The  brick-built Church was first used for services in September 1939 and was used as both church and parish hall.  When the new parish hall was added in 1952 the old building was used solely as a Church.

St Francis' Church was consecrated by the Bishop of Exeter, the Right Reverend Dr Robert Cecil Mortimer, on the evening of Wednesday October 3rd 1956.  The Suffragan Bishop of Plymouth, the Right Reverend Doctor Norman Harry Clarke, and the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, Mr & Mrs W J Oats, and the parish priest, the Reverend Douglas Jago, were also present.

The stained-glass windows, murals and side rooms were added in 1954 and the Lady Chapel and vicarage were built in 1956.
