CHURCHES, CHAPELS AND PLACES OF WORSHIP  |  ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCHES

CHURCH OF THE HOLY CROSS AND SAINT TERESA

Updated:  11 June 2011

The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Cross and Saint Teresa is situated in Beaumont Road, Plymouth.

In 1871 Bishop Vaughan purchased a piece of and adjacent to Gasking Street and converted the property that stood there into a Carmelite Convent.  The Chapel was dedicated him on Wednesday May 8th 1872 and in his sermon he told how the site had been occupied by a Carmelite Convent before the Reformation.  He added that it was planned to erect a larger church for the benefit of Catholics living in that area of Plymouth.  [1]

The present Gothic-style building was erected in 1854 at Teignmouth, Devon, to the designs of Mr C Hansom.  When in 1881-82 a tunnel was opened out near Teignmouth railway station, the building was moved stone by stone to this site in Plymouth and re-erected.  It was opened on December 20th 1881.

In 1888-89 the nave was extended and in 1907 the chancel and aisles were added by Messrs Scoles & Raymond.
