PLYMOUTH CINEMAS

CARLTON THEATRE

On July 8th 1936 the licence and lease of the Gaiety Theatre in Union Street, Plymouth, was transferred from Messrs H B Mather Cinemas Ltd to Messrs W E and E J Pope. They ran small cinemas in Tavistock and Wadebridge as well as the Carlton at Okehampton.

After re-seating the premises during the summer of 1936, the Gaiety was reopened on Saturday August 1st 1936 as the Carlton Theatre.

The premises were owned by Mr C Lowe.  It was said to seat only 580 people and it had a staff of nine.  It closed on Saturday June 3rd 1939 due to the expiry of the lease.

Messrs G E Prance and W Mumford bought the premises and turned it into the Embassy Cinema.
