CINEMAS

STUDIO SEVEN

The Associated British Cinemas (ABC) group sold the lease of the ABC Plaza Cinema to the Star Group of Leeds, who took over the management from Sunday March 23rd 1969.  The Group ran some 70 cinemas and 120 bingo halls so it is not surprising that rumours quickly spread that it was about to be turned into yet another bingo hall.  The cinema was closed on Sunday September 7th for redecoration and some technical alterations.  During its final week it shew "Body Stealers" with George Sanders and Maurice Evans and "Mission Mars".  On the final Sunday there was a special show comprising "Haunted Palace" and "Masque of the Red Death", both starring Vincent Price.

On the following Thursday, September 11th 1969, it reopened under the name Studio Seven and with a new manager, Mr Alan Gregory.  With its new name and manager came a new image, the first films being "I, a Woman" with Essy Persson, and "Roseanna".

Studio Seven closed on Saturday March 27th 1976 with the films "More Sexy Canterbury Tales" and "I am a Nymphomaniac" and reopened the following day as the Plaza Cinema once again.
