Those people listed in the
Devonshire Lay Subsidy Roll of 1332 [1], compiled for HM King Edward III,
were amongst the earliest known residents of the area covered by the modern
City of Plymouth.
The names were compiled by Hundred
and then Manor. Plymouth was then in the Hundred of Roborough and
Plympton and Plymstock were in the Hundred of Plympton.
Christian names are the modern
equivalent but surnames are spelt as in the original document. It
is useful to remember that a "V" in those days often indicated a "U" and
in many cases a "W" would be a "V" in modern spelling. A similar
problem applies to the letters "I" and "J".
