EXMOUTH HALL

Updated:  13 January 2011

The Exmouth Hall, in Exmouth Road, Stoke, Devonport, was designed by Mr H T Hammick to be used for dances, entertainments, and cub meetings.  It was also a popular venue for wedding receptions.

Below the main hall, which could hold upwards of 700 people, was a smaller room suitable for whist-drives and three club-rooms.

Alderman J P Brown, the Deputy-Mayor of Plymouth, opened the Hall on the evening of Wednesday October 3rd 1923.

The opening ceremony was followed by an entertainment organised by Mr W G Hitt to raise funds for the local hospitals.  Those taking part included Miss Netta Cornish, Mr Marrack Harvey, Mr Pedrick Harvey, Mr R A Newcombe, Miss Constance Kelly, Mr Syd Jinks, Miss Vera Cocks, Miss Kathleen Pryor, Mr James Vosper, Mr F H Noel Pike, and Miss Muriel Dankward.  Mr C W McAlister accompanied the artists and the lighting effects were under the control of Mr Donald G Hitt.

It is not known when the Exmouth Hall ceased to be used but it was probably during the 1990s.  The site is now covered by a social housing block.
