ORESTON PASSAGE FERRY

The Oreston Passage Ferry ran from the Passage House Inn, Cattedown, Plymouth, across the Cattewater to Turn Quay at Oreston, in the old parish of Plymstock.

It is thought that the ferry dated back to the 16th century and for possibly all of its existence the toll was one half-penny.

The servivce started at 6am to collect the Royal Mail from Plymouth.

It would appear that the Ferry ceased operation in the 1920s, probably as the result of the introduction of comfortable motor bus service across the Laira Bridge to Plymstock and Oreston.
