The horse-drawn Hackney Cabs of Plymouth, which had been operating since about 1829, had to be licensed by the Borough Councils and latterly by Plymouth City Council. In 1937 only two licenses were issued. During 1938 this had decreased to one; the last one, because in July 1939 none were issued and that was the end of the horse-drawn Hackney Cab in Plymouth.
