The Trefusis House Children's Hostel at Laira, Plymouth, was opened by Mrs Mildmay on Wednesday November 21st 1917. The Hostel was for the shelter and care of children where the mother was too ill to look after them. It was promoted by Mr and Mrs G N Dickinson, of Stonehouse, and the nurses of the Three Towns Nursing Association, who had long felt that their work should be supplemented by some means of caring for the children while their mothers were ill or in hospital and unable to look after them. Miss C J Jerram, from Talland, near Looe in Cornwall, was appointed Matron and honorary secretary and who was giving her services free of charge. Mrs Dickinson was appointed honorary treasurer. Doctor C D Lindsey was the honorary physician. Twelve children could be accommodated at any one time. No boys over the age of 10 would be admitted and no girls over the age of 12. It is noteworthy today that children over those ages were expected to fend for themselves.
