PLYMOUTH PROPRIETARY LIBRARY

Updated:  28 November 2011

The Plymouth Proprietary Library, now situated at the top of North Hill, is the oldest library in the City.

It was founded at a meeting held in Plymouth on Wednesday November 20th 1811.  One of its promoters was Mr George Eastlake.  [1]

The foundation stone of its premises, which were then in the old Cornwall Street, was laid in 1812.  [1]

Although it was at that time called the "Plymouth Public Library", it was privately owned by its subscribers.  [1]

Its premises in Cornwall Street were destroyed during the Second World War.
