LAIRA GREAT WAR MEMORIAL

'In Memory of Laira Men who fell in the Great War, 1914-1918'.  This Memorial is set high on a wall in Old Laira Road, Laira, Plymouth.  It was not, of course, known as the First World War at that time since nobody thought there would ever be another like it.

It records the following names:  A V Allan; W G Bath; W J Birch; W M Bodilly; O W Brown; A Burgoyne; A O Campbell; F Carter; R T Dawe; W H Dawe; W Giles; R G Gill; A Gray; W H Guppy; C S Haver James; T A Hayward; H D Herring; M N Herring; M G Howard; R Lear; J Pearce; H L Ricketts; W H G Samson; S Sleman; A Tipton; W V Turner; F Werran; S Werran; A J Willams; W J Wyatt; P Luscombe; and officers and men of the East Lancs Regiment who were stationed in Laira.

The inscription ends with the words 'Greater love have no man than this'.
