MEMORIALS AND MONUMENTS

D-DAY MEMORIAL, HOOE, PLYMSTOCK

Updated:  23 March 2011

On Hooe Green, Plymstock, is a Dartmoor granite stone upon which is a plaque dedicated to the embarkation of the United States Army, 29th Division, from Turnchapel to spearhead the Normandy landings on D-Day, June 6th 1944.

During the previous year Barton Road was reinforced in order to enable tanks and personnel to be loaded on to Landing Ships, Tanks, or LSTs, from concrete block platforms constructed at Turnchapel, which was renamed Sycamore Beach.

The plaque was unveiled at a ceremony on Friday June 4th 2004, when Major Nathan Hale, commanding officer of 539 Assault Squadron, Royal Marines, based at Turnchapel, laid a wreath at the base of the monument.
