MEMORIALS AND MONUMENTS

KOREAN VETERANS' MEMORIAL

Updated:  23 March 2011

The Korean Veterans' Memorial is located in the Garden of Remembrance in the old Bull Ring area beneath the Belvedere on Plymouth Hoe.

IN PROUD MEMORY OF
THOSE MEMBERS OF THE UN
(BRITISH FORCES)
WHO DIED
DURING AND SINCE
THE KOREAN WAR 1950 - 1953
NOT ONE OF THEM IS
FORGOTTEN BEFORE GOD

On June 25th 1950 the North Korean army crossed the 38th parallel into South Korea.  This was judged by the United States, Great Britain and many other countries to be a direct challenge to the authority of the newly formed United Nations and many nations sent troops to resist this unprovoked attack.   This included some 40,000 British men from the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Air Force and Merchant Navy over the three years of the conflict.  Over 1,000 men did not return.

This Memorial was erected by the Plymouth Branch of the British Korean Veterans' Association and a short service of remembrance is held here every year on the Sunday nearest June 25th.
