MEMORIALS AND MONUMENTS

SOUTH ATLANTIC FORCES MEMORIAL

Updated:  20 March 2011

The South Atlantic Forces Memorial is a plaque situated above the inside entrance to Plymouth Railway Station.  It commemorates all those members of the armed forces who fell at the Falkland Islands in 1982 and the Memorial has been deliberately set facing in to the Station so that it will be seen by servicemen arriving at Plymouth by train.

The Memorial was unveiled by Admiral David Brown, Flag Officer, Plymouth, in the presence of Mr Paul Witter, West of England Divisional Manager of British Rail, and Mr Charles Nicholls, manager of Plymouth Station.  [1]

Made in satin anodised aluminium by Messrs Continental Engravers (Precision) Ltd of Cattedown, Plymouth, the plaque includes crests representing the Royal Navy (top left); the Royal Air Force (second left); the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (bottom left); the Regular Army (top right); the Royal Marines (middle right); and the Merchant Navy (bottom right).  [1]

Beneath the two faces of the South Atlantic Medal is the inscription: 'In memory of the members of all Services who gave their lives on the South Atlantic, 1982'.
