MEMORIALS AND MONUMENTS

Z4 SECRET RADAR UNIT MEMORIAL

Updated:  20 March 2011

Although the location of this Memorial, at Ridge Cross in the parish of Brixton, is outside the City of Plymouth boundary, the buildings on this site were intimately connected with the defence of Plymouth during the dark days of the Second World War.

DURING WORLD WAR 2
THE SECRET RADAR UNIT OF
144 HEAVY ANTI-AIRCRAFT
ROCKET  BATTERY
WAS BASED IN THIS FIELD
CODE NAME Z4
THIS MEMORIAL PAYS TRIBUTE
TO ALL THOSE WHO
SERVED HERE IN THE DEFENCE OF
PLYMOUTH 1941 - 1945.

For two years between 1943 and 1945 a radar unit was based at Ridge Cross to detect approaching German bombers.  Plymouth was not always their target, often it was Avonmouth or South Wales.

The Memorial was unveiled in early May 2009 by 84-years-old Ms Dee Jordan, of Northampton, who at the age of 18 was a member of one of the two ATS Royal Artillery teams of six females who operated the radar.
