BIRCHAM MILL, EGGBUCKLAND

Bircham Corn Mill was in the parish of Eggbuckland, near Pool Farm at the lower end of Blunt's Lane.

It was owned by Mr John Briggs, gentleman, of Fursdon, who in 1787 let the Mill to Mr Mark Howard at £35 per annum.  Mr Briggs erected a new mill in 1789 and the rent went up to £51.

Bircham Mill is shown on the Eggbuckland tithe map of 1839, when it was owned by Mr Thomas Briggs and let to Mr John Weetman.  Its mill pond was 28 perches in extent.

At the time of the census in 1851, 43-years-old Mr Charles Weeks was the master miller, employing 1 man.  He and his wife, Anne, had a large family, five daughters and two sons, the youngest being Frances Mary Weeks, only one month old.  They probably needed the 23-years-old house servant, Emma Jane Hard, from Cornwood.

It seems to have become Lower Bircham by the end of the 19th century.
