TAMERTON or MANOR MILL, TAMERTON FOLIOT

The Tamerton Mill in the parish and village of Tamerton Foliot was also known as the Manor Mill.

Like Budshead Mill, further down Tamerton Creek, it was a tide-mill.  In 1780 it belonged to Mr Walter Radcliffe of Warleigh House and was tenanted by a Mr Churchill.

At the time of the census in 1851, the Mill itself was unoccupied but the miller, Mr John Meathrel or Meathrol was lodging with William and Betsey Stephens at the King's Arms in the village.  He was 39-years-old and came from Dean Prior, near Buckfastleigh.

Later millers were Mr Peter Stephens in 1870, Mr William H Hoskins in 1879, Mr Charles Vicary in 1890, and Mr John Pethick, who was also a wheelright,  in 1897.  Interestingly, in 1932, when it was known as the Manor Mill, it was occupied by a Mr John Pethick junior and an Agnes Pethick ran the King's Arms.
