WESTERN NATIONAL OMNIBUS COMPANY

MOTOR BUS ROUTE "83"

PLYMOUTH to YELVERTON and TAVISTOCK

On Monday May 13th 1929 the Western National Omnibus Company formally took over the National Omnibus Company's service 201 from Plymouth to Crownhill, Yelverton, Horrabridge and Tavistock and part of their service 203, which continued beyond Tavistock to Okehampton.  From Wednesday January 1st 1930 they became Western National's service 83.

The service ran from Plymouth's St Andrew's Cross through Old Town Street, Tavistock Road, North Hill, Mutley Plain, Hartley Vale, Crownhill, Roborough, Yelverton Golf Links, Yelverton Cross Roads, Horrabridge, Grenofen (Halfway House), and Tavistock Cemetery before terminating at Bedford Square, Tavistock.

During the winter timetable for 1935-36 the frequency was hourly on the hour from both Plymouth and Tavistock, commencing at 8am and finishing with the 10pm from Tavistock and the 11.10pm from Plymouth.  The journey took 35 minutes to Yelverton or 55 minutes to Tavistock.  The timetable operated in full on Sundays.

The adult single fares from Plymouth during the winter of 1935-36 were:  to Crownhill Barracks, 4d; to the Lope's Arms at Roborough, 8d; to the Golf Links, 10d; to Yelverton Cross Roads, 1 shilling; to the Saddler's Shop at Horrabridge, 1/3d; to Bedford Square, Tavistock, 1/9d.  Adult return fares were 1/9d to Yelverton Cross Roads and 2/9d to Tavistock.

Return bus tickets were also valid on the Great Western Railway between Yelverton Station and Plymouth.

From Saturday April 29th 1950 alternate journeys were routed through either Whitchurch (timed at the Post Office) or Grenofen Cross.

By the summer of 1956 the frequency had been increased to half-hourly and the journey on the half-hour was routed through Whitchurch.  At that time there was a 5.50am departure from Bedford Square, which ran via Whitchurch to St Levan Road, Keyham and Devonport Royal Dockyard.  It was due to arrive at Fore Street at 6.50am and departed again at 6.52am for Crownhill and Tavistock.

The first bus from Plymouth was now at 7.30am, due to arrive at Tavistock at 8.27am.  The first bus for Plymouth left Tavistock at 6.55am and was due to arrive at St Andrew's Cross at 7.50am.  The last buses were at 10.35pm from either end.

From Sunday September 9th 1956 the service via Whitchurch became the 83A.
