MOTOR BUS ROUTE "84" PLYMOUTH to CROWNHILL, YELVERTON and On Monday May 13th 1929 the Western National Omnibus Company formally took over the National Omnibus Company's service 207 from Plymouth to Crownhill, Yelverton, Crapstone and Buckland Monachorum. From Wednesday January 1st 1930 it became Western National's service 84. Services operated by the Embankment Motor Company (Plymouth) Ltd were amalgamated into the 84 from Wednesday April 5th 1933. The service ran from Plymouth's St Andrew's Cross through Old Town Street, Tavistock Road, North Hill, Mutley Plain, Crownhill, Roborough, Yelverton Golf Links, Yelverton Cross Roads, Crapstone and terminating at Buckland Monachorum Church. During the winter timetable for 1935-36 the first bus left Plymouth at 8.50am and was due to arrive at Buckland Monachorum Church at 9.35am. It departed for Plymouth at 9.50am. However, the route between Plymouth and the Buckland Monachorum Institute was covered by service 85, which left there at 8.02 and 8.42am for Plymouth. The last bus home from Plymouth was at 7.40pm but again there two later services on the route 85, at 8.40 as far as the Institute, and at 9.40pm, which included both the Institute and the Church in its final run to Milton Combe and back again. Thus the last bus, a service 85, left Buckland Monachorum Church at 10.50pm. The adult single fares from Plymouth during the winter of 1935-36 were: to Crownhill Barracks, 4d; to Yelverton Cross Roads, 1 shilling; to Crapstone, 1/2d; and to Buckland Monachorum, 1/3d. Adult return fares were 1s 10d to Crapstone and 2 shillings to Buckland Monachorum. Return bus tickets were also valid on the Great Western Railway between Yelverton Station and Plymouth. Service 84 was withdrawn from Saturday June 1st 1940 as an unnecessary duplication of service 85.
