WESTERN NATIONAL OMNIBUS COMPANY

MOTOR BUS ROUTE "88/88A"

PLYMOUTH to PLYMPTON, LEE MILL and IVYBRIDGE

On Monday May 13th 1929 the Western National Omnibus Company formally took over the National Omnibus Company's service 209 from Plymouth to Ivybridge and Totnes.  From Wednesday January 1st 1930 it was amalgamated into Western National's service 128 to Torquay.  But on Sunday July 12th 1931 the Southern General Omnibus Company commenced a new service to Ivybridge.  This service was operated in conjunction with Western National as service 88 until the smaller business was transferred to them on November 1st 1931. 

The service ran from Plymouth's St Andrew's Cross through Old Town Street, North Hill, Alexandra Road, Old Laira Road, Laira, Marsh MIlls, the Ridgeway, and then on the main Exeter road past the Lyneham Inn, Lee Mill, and the Julian Arms, before terminating at the Bridge in Ivybridge.

Commening on April 19th 1934, one journey early in the morning ran as route 88A as far as the Plymouth Technical College in Tavistock Road and then went off along Cobourg Street to the Royal Dockyard and the Royal Naval Barracks.

During the winter service of 1935-36 the first bus from Plymouth's St Andrew's Cross left at 7am.  It returned from Ivybridge at 7.45am, Lee Mill at 7.51am and the Lyneham Inn at 7.56am and was due to arrive back at St Andrew's Cross at 8.17am.  The next journey from Ivybridge started at 8am and then 9.15am, 11.38am, 12.38pm, 1.21pm, 3.38pm, and then every hour until 9.43pm.  The last bus from Ivybridge was at 10.43pm on Mondays to Fridays only.  The last buses from Plymouth were at 10.55pm on Mondays to Fridays and 11.15pm on Saturdays.

The adult single fares from Plymouth during the winbter of 1935-36 were:  to Plympton George Hotel, 5d; to Deep Lane End, 6d; to Smithaleigh, 8d; to Lee Mill, 8d; to the Julian Arms (now the Hunters Inn), 10d; and to Ivybridge, 1 shilling.  The adult return fare was 1s 9d.  The workmen travelling to Devonport Royal Dockyard paid either 1s 2d single or purchased a weekly ticket costing 4 shillings.  There was also a special fare of 7d from Ivybridge to Plympton's St Mary's Church.

Service 88A was extended as far as South Brent from Thursday June 1st 1950 but abandoned entirely from Sunday January 17th 1954.   From Sunday June 18th 1961 service 88 was extended to Ugborough.
