MOTOR BUS ROUTE "129""

PLYMOUTH to BUCKFASTLEIGH, ASHBURTON and EXETER

On Monday May 13th 1929 the Western National Omnibus Company formally took over the National Omnibus Company's service 234 from Plymouth to Exeter, in to which had been amalgamated services 212 to Exeter and 213 to Buckfastleigh.  From Wednesday January 1st 1930 they became Western National's service 129.

The service ran from Plymouth's St Andrew's Cross through Old Town Street, Tavistock Road, North Hill, Alexandra Road, Old Laira Road, Crabtree, Marsh Mills, Plympton, Lee Mill, Ivybridge, Bittaford, South Brent, Dean Prior, Buckfastleigh, Ashburton, Bickington, Drum Bridge, Chudleigh Knighton, Chudleigh, Haldon, Kennford and in to Paul Street Bus Park at Exeter.

This service was operated jointly with the Devon General Omnibus & Touring Company.

During the winter of 1935-36 buses left Plymouth St Andrew's Cross at 8.50am, 12.30pm, 3.45pm and 7.30pm, taking two hours and ten minutes for the journey to Exeter.   Departures from Exeter were at 9.05am, 1.05pm, 5.05pm and 6.15pm.  On Saturdays and Sundays only there was an additional service from Plymouth at 9.30pm as far as Ashburton, with the run home commencing at 10.42pm and arriving back in Plymouth at 11.54pm.

In addition, between September 30th and October 13th 1935 an additional bus left Plymouth at 10.30am and Exeter at 11.15am to make connections with the Royal Blue express service to and from Bournemouth, Southampton and London.

Adult single fares from Plymouth during the winter of 1935-36 were: to South Brent (London Hotel), 1s 6d; to Buckfastleigh (White Hart Hotel), 2 shillings; to Ashburton (Bull Ring), 2s 5d; to Chudleigh Knighton and Chudleigh, 3s 3d; to Exeter (Paris Street) 4s 6d.  Return fares to Buckfastleigh, Ashburton, Chudleigh and Exeter were 3s 9d, 4 shillings, 5s 6d, and 6s 6d respectively.
