GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY COMPANY ROAD MOTORS

PLYMOUTH to KINGSBRIDGE and DARTMOUTH

On March 25th 1921 the Great Western Railway started a bus service from Millbay Station to Kingsbridge and Dartmouth.

The weekday service commencing on Monday July 9th 1923 began with the 9.15am to Kingsbridge, arrive 11.02.  This connected with the 11.25am service from Salcombe to Dartmouth, where it was due to arrive at 1.15pm.  The 10.10am from Plymouth ran as far as Modbury, where it arrived at 11.25.  The 12.15pm ran as far as Kingsbridge, again providing a connection, at 2.30pm, to Dartmouth.  The 12.55pm went only as far as Modbury.

Kingsbridge was the destination of the 2.35pm from Millbay, connecting once again with the service from Salcombe to Dartmouth.  At 3.35pm there was a short run to Yealmpton only, followed at 4.40pm by another service to Kingsbridge, with an onward connection for Dartmouth.  At 5.15pm a bus departed from Millbay for Modbury followed an hour later by the last bus affording a connection at Kingsbridge for Dartmouth.  The whole journey was timed to take four hours, including a ten minute break at Kingsbridge to change buses.

Another bus for Yealmpton only left at 7.15pm, followed by two more Kingsbridge, at 7.45 and 8.45pm.  The last bus of the day left Millbay at 9.35pm, Plymstock at 9.45, Billacombe at 9.55, Elburton at 10, Brixton at 10.10, and arrived at Yealmpton at 10.20pm.

That last bus stayed overnight at Yealmpton and returned to Plymouth as the first bus of the day at 8.25am.  This was timed at Brixton, 8.32; Elburton, 8.40; Billacombe, 8.45; Plymstock, 8.50; and was due to arrive in the forecourt of Millbay Station at 9.10am.

The second inward journey of the day was the 8am from Kingsbridge, due at 10.05, which was followed by the 9.20am from Kingsbridge, which also brought passengers off a connection from Torcross, Stokenham, Chillington and Frogmore.   This was due to arrive at 11.25.

At 12.45pm the first bus outward to Modbury returned to Plymouth as the 11.30 from Modbury.

It is odd that there were no through services to Dartmouth but there were three in the opposite direction.  The vehicle that left Dartmouth at 10.20am, spent only one minute at Kingsbridge Station before leaving at 12.05pm to continue right into Plymouth.  The whole journey took 3 hours 50 minutes and it was due to arrive at 2.10pm.

The 12.55pm to Modbury returned from there at 2.15pm, arriving at Millbay at 3.30pm.

At 4.35pm the second of the through vehicles was due, having left Dartmouth at 12.35 and Kingsbridge, after a five minute break, at 2.30pm.

The short service from Yealmpton returned to Millbay at 5.15, to be followed at 5.50 by the 3.45 from Modbury.  There was then a break until 7.05pm, when the 5pm from Kingsbridge was due, followed at 7.45 by the 6.30pm from Modbury.  Another short run service from Yealmpton arrived at 8.45.

Finally came the third through service from Dartmouth, which had left there at 5.35, and chugged its way through Strete (6.15), Slapton (Royal Sands Hotel, 6.25), Frogmore (Post Office, 7pm), Churchstow (Church House Inn, 7.30), Modbury (8.15), Yealmpton (8.45), Elburton (9pm), and Plymstock (9.10), and was due to arrive at Millbay Station at 9.30pm.

There was a Sunday service as well.

In 1925 the timings over the road to Modbury were co-ordinated with those of the services run by the Devon Motor Transport Company.

The service ceased on December 31st 1928, after which it was run by the Western National Omnibus Company.
