MOTOR BUS ROUTE "D"

When the service started in late 1922, it was service 4 and ran from the Theatre Royal via George Street, Bedford Street, Old Town Street, Regent Street, Lipson Road and Mount Gold Road to the junction with Carfrae Terrace.  By 1924 it had been diverted through Ebrington Street instead of Regent Street.

In the timetablefor 1924/25 the first bus left the Theatre Royal at 7.30am and Mount Gold (sic) at 7.45am.  The last bus from the Theatre was at 10.30pm and from Mount Gold at 10.45pm.  This left the Theatre for Milehouse at 11pm.   There was no Sunday service.

In 1925 it became service D.  By 1928 the route had been curtailed to start from the Guildhall

Under the new route licensing regulations that came into force on Wednesday July 8th 1931, route D was officially known as H.1298 and was licensed to run from the Guildhall through Ebrington Street, Tothill Road, Lipson Road and Queen's Gate to Mount Gold (sic).

When the whole network was renumbered on Monday April 5th 1937, the D became route 23.
