PLYMOUTH CORPORATION TRAWMAYS DEPARTMENT

MOTOR BUS ROUTE "E"

It is unclear exactly when this new motor bus service started but it first appeared in the monthly financial return to the Council for the four weeks ended June 27th 1925.  As only 109 miles had been clocked up, it would suggest that the service started earlier in that month.

The first route was from the Guildhall to Old Town Street, Treville Street, and Exeter Street to Cattedown Corner and then down to Cattedown itself, where it terminated at Commercial Road.  In 1928 it was extended at the Guildhall end to run to Pier Street at West Hoe, which it reached via Millbay Road and Grand Parade.

Under the new route licensing regulations that came into force on Wednesday July 8th 1931, route E was officially known as H.1299 and was licensed to run from Cattedown via Cattedown Road, Treville Street, Millbay Road and Grand Parade Road to the West Hoe and Promenade Piers.

Three "special" services were also licensed.  The E1 (H.1334) ran from Pier Street, through West Hoe Road, Tavistock Road and Alexandra Road to Laira; the E2 (H.1335) ran from Pier Street and West Hoe Road through St Jude's to Mount Gold (sic) Road; while the E3 (H.1336) started from Walker Terrace and ran via West Hoe Road to Fore Street, Devonport, and on to North Keyham (St Levan's Gate).

At some point the main route E was changed to run via Lockyer Street, Citadel Road and Radford Road because in October 1932 it was announced that it would revert to its old route via Millbay Road and West Hoe Terrace.  In the summer of 1935 it was further extended to Madiera Road, in front of the Hoe.

When the whole network was renumbered on Monday April 5th 1937, the E became route 22.
