MOTOR BUS ROUTE "K"

Plymouth's motor bus service "K" commenced running in February 1929.  It ran from the Theatre Royal, to Mutley, Tor Lane, Beacon Park, Dingle Road, Royal Navy Avenue, and South Keyham to Fore Street at Devonport.  Shortly afterwards, the K1 was started as a short-run service from Fore Street to Beacon Park only.

Under the new route licensing regulations that came into force on Wednesday July 8th 1931, route K was officially known as H.1307 and was licensed to run from Theatre Royal, through Old Town Street, Mutley Plain, Reservoir Road, Torr Lane (sic), Beacon Park, Beacon Park Road, Austin Avenue, Avondale Terrace, Fore Street, and back to the Theatre Royal as a circular service, although it is unclear if this extension beyond Fore Street was used at that time.

From October 17th 1932 the route was diverted along Collings Park, Eggbuckland Road and Higher Compton Road instead of Reservoir Road to replace part of route N.

In 1935 proposals were put forward for the alteration of tram routes 3 and 12 and bus route K and on Monday January 27th 1936 the K became the K1, a circular service, continuing from Fore Street down Chapel Street, Cumberland Street and Devonport Hill to Stonehouse Bridge.  At the same time a reverse service was started as the K2.

A final amendment to route was made during 1937 when the services were diverted via Paradise Road and King's Road to Stonehouse Bridge.

When the whole network was renumbered on Monday April 5th 1937, the K1 (Plymouth-Beacon Park-Devonport-Stonehouse-Plymouth) became route 30 and the K2 (Plymouth-Stonehouse-Devonport-Beacon Park-Plymouth) became route 31.
