PLYMOUTH CORPORATION TRAMWAYS DEPARTMENT

MOTOR BUS ROUTE "M"

Plymouth's motor bus service "M" is thought to have commenced running on Friday December 30th 1927.  Its route was from the Guildhall through Ebrington Street, St Jude's Corner, Lanhydrock Road, to Laira Embankment.  It was a one man operated service.

Under the new route licensing regulations that came into force on Wednesday July 8th 1931, route M was officially known as H.1309 and was licensed to run from the Guildhall through Ebrington Street and Lanhydrock Road to Laira Embankment.  A route M1 was also licensed (H.1347) to run from the Theatre Royal, Bedford Street, Tothill Road, to the Laira Bridge Boundary.

It was possibly a vehicle on this service which collided with a tram in Ebrington Street at 8.30pm on July 11th 1931 resulting in the deaths of two girls and seriously injuring a woman.

The route was curtailed at Heathfield Road at some time during 1931/32 and finally, on December 4th 1932, it was announced that the service was to be withdrawn.
