MOTOR BUS ROUTE "P" Plymouth's motor bus service "P" commenced on Monday December 10th 1928, running from Fore Street at Devonport, through King Street, Morice Square, New Passage Hill, William Street, Albert Road, Charlotte Street, Herbert Street, to Pasley Street, Stoke. What the authorities had overlooked, probably quite deliberately, was the fact that over in Plymouth there was already a route P. When, in 1922, the tram service 9 had been cut back to Old Town Street to Peverell Corner, it had been renumbered P in a complete reversal of the system of only giving letters to motor bus services. Shortly after the new bus service had started the Devonport Mercantile Association asked the Council if the route on the return journey from Pasley Street could be via Victoria Place, Devonport GWR Station and Tamar Terrace, and that a service be started in the reverse direction making the route circular. The Council resolved that in view of the 'contemplated extension' through Browning Road and Swilly Road in the direction of Weston Mill, this suggestion should not be entertained. Under the new route licensing regulations that came into force on Wednesday July 8th 1931, route P was officially known as H.1310 and was licensed to run from Fore Street to South Keyham Gate, Charlotte Street to terminate in Pasley Street. In the event, sometime around October 1932 the P was extended from Pasley Street through Browning Road, Milehouse Hill, Wolseley Road, Swilly Road, Furneaux Road, West Down Road and South Down Road to its junction with North Down Road. Sometime during the late 1930s -- certainly by 1937 -- the direct turnout on to Milehouse Hill was abandoned in favour of Bartholomew Road and St Levan Road. In the general route renumbering scheme that came into operation on Monday April 5th 1937, motor bus service P became route 13. RETURN TO Motor Bus Services, Plymouth Corporation Tramways Department
