MOTOR BUS SERVICES

PIONEER SALOON BUSES (Tamerton Foliot)

Created:  06 March 2011

Tamerton Foliot, a small village and parish situated to the north of Plymouth, must have been a really prosperous place in the 1920s because it seems to have sustained several independent motor bus service operators.  One of them was Mr Ambrose Octavius Facey.

Mr Facey was actually a blacksmith and farrier in Star Lane, Tamerton Foliot, where he lived with his wife, Mrs Edith Facey, and two daughters, Edith Mary Facey and Ellen Facey.  He was aged 41 years at the time of the 1911 census.  [1]

Living at Stoke Cottages in the same village was 62-years-old Mr Charles Vicary, with his wife, Mrs Celia Vicary, and their three children.  Mr Vicary was a grocer and also operated a carrier service, presumably to Plymouth Market.  [2]

It seems that when, or after, Mr Vicary died in 1914 Mr Facey took over the carrier's service and introduced a motor vehicle.  However, this may not have been until 1921, when Mrs Celia Vicary passed away.  It is not known if this was a lorry fitted with benches as required or a proper omnibus.  [3]

Mr Facey presumably acquired a proper motor bus at some time because when he sold the service to the Devon Motor Transport Company on December 31st 1927, the vehicle was sold to Messrs W Mumford Ltd, on condition that it was not re-sold to a competitor.  [4]
