DEVONSHIRE FREEHOLDER AND GENERAL ADVERTISER
In 1821 the Devonshire Freeholder and General Advertiser was started by Mr R Bond, of Whimple Street, Plymouth, who had previously published the Patriot. When most newspapers changed their name it was because a new owner had taken over. The Devonshire Freeholder was different. Mr Bond simply purchased some new and better type and decided it provided an opportune moment to include in a new name a clearer indication of where it was published. Thus from Saturday January 7th 1826 the Devonshire Freeholder and General Advertiser became the Plymouth Herald and Devonshire Freeholder: or West of England General Advertiser. Sources:
