PLYMOUTH MAIL, DEVONPORT, STONEHOUSE AND The Plymouth Mail, Devonport, Stonehouse and Western Counties Advertiser was started on December 14th 1852 to suppprt the election candidate, Mr Charles Mare. It was edited by Mr Mortimer Collins, whom Whitfeld describes as 'a fine, handsome man, who was known as the "King of the Bohemians" by reason of his indifference to the canons of social observance'. On one occasion the Mail's printing press broke down and it is claimed that Mr Aitken Davies, whose connection with the paper is not clear, walked across George Street, broke in to the office of the Plymouth and Devonport Weekly Journal and carried their " printing formes" back to the Mail's presses. The Plymouth Mail ceased publication on May 21st 1862.
