EDWIN ALFRED BOOLDS In 1838, at the age of 22, Miss Harriet Jane Boolds opened a small haberdashery shop in Pond Lane, in what had a few years before become the Town of Devonport. She was the eldest of a large family of four sisters and three brothers. [2] The youngest of those brothers, Edwin Alfred Boolds, served his apprenticeship with his sister but then went to Messrs William Tarn & Company, wholesale drapers, of Newington Causeway, London, and Messrs Jackson's at Salisbury in Wiltshire to gain knowledge. When he returned to Devonport, on 1860, she took him into partnership and the business became Messrs H J & E A Boolds. The two of them were then living with their widowed father at number 7 Catherine Lane. [1] Mr Edwin Alfred Boolds married Miss Fanny Proctor at St Mary's Church on September 24th 1868 and in 1873 they had a son, James Edwin Cornelius Boolds. When, in either 1904 or 1906 (sources differ [3]), the business was changed into a limited liability company, with Mr Edwin Alfred Boolds as chairman. [1] Mr Edwin Alfred Boolds died peacefully at 1.30pm on Wednesday January 15th 1908 at number 8 Albermarle Villas, Stoke. He was 73 years of age. [1] During his life he had been an enthusiastic sailor, and at various times owned the yawl "Tritonia" (40 tons), the cutters "Blue Rock" (90 tons) and "Reverie" (60 tons) and the steam yacht "White Eagle" (159 tons). He was a member of Royal Clyde and Royal Cornwall Yacht Clubs and was a founder member and rear commodore of the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. [1] Indeed the Club sent a wreath in the shape and colours of the Rear Commodore's flag. The funeral arrangements were conducted by Messrs T Jenkin & Son, of Marlborough Street, Devonport. [4] In local government he had represented St Aubyn Ward as a Liberal on the Devonport Borough Council. In 1892 he was made a Justice of the Peace. Mr Boolds also served as a trustee of the Devonport Savings Bank and a member of the Royal Albert Hospital management committee. [1] Principal Source:
